First unscrew the silver bullet plastic nose to expose the 3 mechanisms, ie the lead, pen, and stylus.. Make sure you are in the pencil mode. Unscrew and remove the tip..(small diameter cylindrical piece).. You should see a brass tip with a whit plastic base. Pull on the this and will come out. Now inside the barrel of the pen you will see a smaller barrell (Might need to shine a bright light on it). Drop into this barrel replacement leads. I usually put in 3 or so... Then replace the white/brass piece (push it in) and the screw back the tip and finally the plastic nose.... Not quite the simplest but it works....Press the cap to advance the lead. If anyone knows a simpler way please share...

You describe 49560 as a refill for 49838 but it looks like I have to buy a whole new pen/pencil and can't get just the refill. Why?

The Ball Point Pen Refill, Avery 49560 is no longer produced through Avery. You maybe able to find it at your local office supply retailer or through other online vendors such as Amazon.

The stylus does not have a rubber tip. It is made from a hard plastic material.
