Question

How to align this template for 8873 stock, Word 2010, Windows 7 and HP j6480?

Ok. I've burned 3 sheets of 8873 stock. I downloaded the template and thought I could just import my data and print. I filled the cells with gray, added a graphic to the left and entered my text into the cell in white. I've gone as far as to measure the 8873 stock precisely in mm and the margins in the template are relatively correct, yet it still doesn't come out right. I tested once with "borderless print to the edge" and it looked better but still not right. Can someone help? I also have publisher if that would be better. Thanks.

Hi Avery,
Thanks for the psuedo-answer. I've also been working with the Avery team via email. This is what I know so far.

1. I tried the www.Avery.com/Print. and I was trying to make the card grey with a black celtic image and white text. This web app was limited and wouldn't let me do that.

2. I did download the very template on this page. The margin measurements of the template do not match the measurements of the stock. I actually have a precision measuring device and they don't match and they weren't altered.

3. There are no misalignment issues everything else prints fine. I will however check the type of paper. I believe it was set to general or plain paper.

What I learned from a variety of sources:

1. Print test runs on plain paper and measure to determine incremental margin changes.

2. Only print the table border. My cards are full-on grey with black images and white text (knock out). I burned up serious ink and paper. If the border lands properly whatever you put in it will print properly also.

3. Here's the big one. There are 4 places in my environment to configure overlapping printer settings. I can configure the print job in Word 2010, HP Solution Center, Devices and Printers and a Web Server that lives on the printer itself. There is one setting "borderless 8.5x11" that needs to be set in Word and on the HP j6480. Unfortunately that setting is not compatible with "double sided printing". My intent was to add a url and a word of thanks on the back. Looks like I'll be flipping the paper manually.

In summary:

I still have not resolved this totally. I just got more ink the other day. Avery is being very helpful via email and I appreciate this attempt to assist me also. Why doesn't it just work? j/k

For best results use the templates available through Avery Design & Print Online at www.Avery.com/Print. The templates are created according to the specifications of the products and does not need to be altered. You may also want to calibrating your printer with the software if you experience any misalignment issues. Additionally, check if your printer settings need to changed to Card or Card stalk. More printing tips are available at the Avery Help Center at www.Avery.com/HelpCenter.

Sounds like you may need to enable the gridlines in order to see the actual card or label cells. If the template looks like a blank page, select Table Tools > Layout > Show Gridlines to view the template layout.

Yes. Windows 8 is not an issue. Open office should not be either. Just check your work and verify that the print lines up the way you expect. You should do this anyway but with open office especially. I have had some items I created for people not maintain margins in open office until redefined IN open office.

We have InDesign templates for the 10-per sheet business cards. If you search on InDesign, all the InDesign template will appear. Our other templates can only import jpgs and other graphic files, not pdfs, so you'd have to save as a different format to import.

I copy/paste photos or other images into a textbox and then I can move the textbook around where I want. The text is typed directly into the template and formatted to adjust for the image. I have also done the opposite where I put the photo/image in the template and the text gets put into a textbox. Either way is kind of a pain, but it works pretty well.

If a template appears blank, your gridlines are turned off. In Word 2007 or 2010, select the Layout tab from the Table Tools tab and click on the View Gridlines button. In older versions, choose the Table tab and Show Gridlines.

No, we don't have templates for Publisher here. We do offer some at Office.Microsoft.com in the templates section, or there are lots of Avery templates built in to Publisher.

When you open the page with the list of templates simply click on the "blue" lettering that is the title of the template. If you have the number of the template, which I see you do, you can also do a search from the main page. Once you get to the template's page click on the "download" button. Save this to a folder that you can remember or make one up that says "Templates". Then open Microsoft Word/ Works, or whatever you have, and then open a new document. Click on open from Template. Then search the folder you left it in. It will open automatically and it is in the proper format for your Microsoft program.
