The last Friday of every month is designated mandatory office clean up day. Everyone can wear denim and we have bagels, doughnuts, and breads. We print out the area work sheets - which tells you how and what to use to clear that particular room, ie kitchen, library, your personal cubicle, conference rooms, bathroom, etc. Our CEO and Managers all participate. We've also used the sign "No MAID Service - Clean Up After Yourself" (privileges to use the kitchen or microwave can be taken away and/ or dishes and food left on Fridays are actually thrown out !

I've found the best way to get co-workers to clean up after themselves is to catch them when they do and compliment them profusely. Positive reinforcement works like a charm. "Wow, thanks for doing that. Not many take that extra step, but it's sooo appreciated."

The breakroom was always a mess with dirty dishes in the sink and on the counter with a dishwasher right next to it -- so -- I put up a sign right above the sink that says " THIS IS NOT YOUR HOUSE AND I AM NOT YOUR MOTHER -- CLEAN IT UP YOURSELF OR DON'T USE IT"
