How to print on heavy card stock

This very much depends on your printer, but in general, unload any paper from your paper tray. I like to fan my card stock to make sure that no pages are sticking together, and even "deal" the pages one at a time to ensure there will be no sticking problems. Then load your card stock, making sure to adjust any guiding edges on the paper tray to your card stock size. Check your printer setting, if possible, to allow for heavier paper printing. Then, most importantly, print a sample first before printing multiple copies to avoid any heartache. I have printed everything from tickets to booklet covers on many different printers and had very few disappointments by following these steps.

I feed my paper straight through, not from the tray and around the rollers. I feed it in front, take a part off the back, and the paper comes straight off the back. Directions for this came with the printer, probably different w/other models.

Always use the manual feed on your printer and not the paper tray. It will not bend and curl the card stock and the results will look professional.

If you are using the Avery Design and Print Online, you need to pick which product you are going to print on. After you design the card, I would recommend testing the design on a cheap piece of paper in B&W. Sometimes the alignment is off so you would need to compensate for that by adding in spaces, tabs or pressing enter to move the words/pic down a line. I have successfully printed many cards with this process!

I find that using the "General Everyday" setting works better than using the "Photo" setting when printing images onto cardstock. The "Photo" setting seems to oversaturate the ink and leaves the image looking like a blob of dark bleeding color.

You may print on heavy card stock by making sure that you push the card stock all the way into the printer once it starts to feed it. This will give it that extra push and edge because of the weight of the card stock.

Heavy card stock is less flexible than ordinary paper so it is important to set your printer for 'heavy card stock'. This is normally done by going into the print settings on the document and selecting heavy card stock as the medium to print on.

Fully adhesive sheets?

I am looking for some 8.5 x 11 paper that is basically all adhesive. i want to design a name and design for my sailboat, get the image on the page(s), and use it as a template, where I will cut out the letters and image, and use as a "mask" to allow for painting of the letters and image.

Great idea, Jeff. You can make this mask of your lettering and design with Avery's full sheet labels. They make a full sheet white label and also a full sheet clear label. I would try the clear label as it will allow you to see exactly where to place the mask. This product number is 18665 and has ten 8.5x11 sheets per box. Be sure to test this process in an inconspicuous area of your sailboat to make sure that the paint doesn't bleed under the edges and that the label removes easily!

Avery makes outdoor labels (white or clear) that can be printed on. One way to create a stencil is to print your image on cardstock, use an exacto-knife to carve out the lettering, then seal with a layer of clear acrylic on BOTH front and back...after it is dry, use a light coat of repositionable adhesive spray, and that should hold your stencil in place, but allow you to move it around without leaving behind any sticky residue.

Question

iron on paper

I saw on Martha Stewart where she ironed on designs on different things. One was formaking coasters and the other was tea towels. She said you made the iron on paper. Could you tell me more about it. How much, where to find it. I wpuld like to try to make both of these things and maybe even more things if I knew what it is called and where to find it. Thanks Virginia

The iron-paper is easy to use, just remember that your design will have to be backwards if it features verbiage. I have a program on my computer that I use for printing transfers, it's called PrintShop. You can select "transfers" with this program. Avery transfer packs include a CD with a similar program, but I'm more familiar with PrintShop, personally. Be prepared to try it several times before actually doing the project that was when you get ready it is perfect.

I know Martha is very creative, but I don't know anyone who "makes" iron-on paper besides Avery and some other reputable paper manufacturers. Avery's iron-on transfer paper is wonderful, and will give you great results. You simply need to choose your design, print it onto the iron-on transfer paper (be sure to reverse the design if necessary - most printing programs and some printers will allow you to do this), and follow Avery's instructions to iron it onto your fabric. Voila! A beautiful design on your fabric!

The iron ons are easy to use and can print off of your printer. Make sure however that the resolution will work for the size you are trying to print, otherwise pictures may appear blurry. I used these iron ons with my class to make a quilt with each child's face on a square. They're great and last a while.

Avery transfer packs include a CD with a similar program, but I'm more familiar with PrintShop, personally. The transfer packs are not cheap --- I got it at a big box discounter for @ $15 for the pack. I think that it was roughly $1 a page. Don't use too hot of an iron. Test a corner.

It is really popular with the teens at my library, so we pick word-free images (not copyrighted) online with them, and just print these out (backwards-ness doesn't matter with images), and iron them on. It's a real crowd-pleaser.

You need the Avery t-shirt transfer paper. It can be printed like normal paper through either a laser or ink jet printer. If you plan on printing on a dark fabric, they even make a transfer just for "dark t-shirts". I'm not sure if it would work on a coaster (unless you're making the coaster from something fabric like) but it would definitely work for a linen towel.

Avery is selling it at their online store for $30, but I think you can also find smaller packages at Target or Walmart for under $20 dollars. Look for it in the stationary department where you would buy office supplies. You can also get it at office supply stores.

The easiest way is to use whichever free "art/photo" program came with your computer. However, the best program I have used so far is Photo Impression. I am able to merge the edges and add in only the part of the pic that I want. There are no unwanted pieces! You can also add in clip-art, and words...making collages is very easy with this! Then you need to save this file as a .jpeg file.

One of my favorite ways is within excel program. Select the paper size you wish (8.5 x 11, 4 x 6 , etc.). Copy and paste your image into the page. By left clicking your mouse you can select the picture, mouse to select any corner of the picture and left click to drag in or out to size the picture as you wish. Repeat these steps with additional photos until your page is filled. Save and store into your document file. To print just select the paper, label, stock, or postcard size you wish and print. I like to print to standard copy paper and insert into Avery Binders, we use so many but I prefer Avery® Heavy-Duty View Binder with 1-1/2" One Touch™ EZD™ Ring 79795, White. While some printers have an adjustment for paper thickness (check your owners manual) most printers have a paper path that is not thick card stock friendly. An alternative might be to print your project on white sticker paper like Avery 53202 and attach the stickers to the heavy stock.

Transfer paper for canvas bag

I am looking for some sort of transfer paper that would transfer images onto a canvas bag. I want to create a teacher's gift by having children draw pictures onto the transfer paper, and then I'll transfer the pictures onto a canvas bag. I'll also need to know what type of markers the children will need to use for this to work.

What a great way to make a teacher happy! Here's one way to do this great project. Have the children draw with any kind of markers or crayons on plain paper that is 7.5 x 10 (just trim an inch off the top and one side of any letter-sized plain paper. Then, scan the pictures into your computer, and print them out on your ink jet printer with any of Avery's iron-on transfers. Even though they say they are for t-shirts, they also work on canvas bags! A couple of caveats- depending upon your scanner and printer software, any lettering might appear reversed, so either test first or don't have the kids use lettering- it may appear backwards. When you press, make sure you use a lot of pressure and iron on a very firm surface. Follow the directions included and you can't go wrong!

I recommend letting the children draw/paint/color their images on any normal paper, then scanning the images into your computer, and printing them on Avery Iron On Transfer Paper. (Make sure to get the appropriate transfer paper, if you are transferring on to a dark fabric, you'll need to make sure to use the "transfers for dark fabric" kind.) The transfer paper is 8 1/2 x 11, so you can print several images per page, and by using the Printer Wizard, you can avoid wasting transfers by choosing to print four 3 x 5 images, or two 5 x 7's, etc. Also, use "general everyday" rather than "photo" setting to get the best results.

Transfer paper for canvas bag
"Design only made on computer" from previous answer brought to mind the following.
Why not allow the children to draw on paper the same size (or their portion)as transfer fabric sheet, then scan and print using transfer fabric same as any copy paper only using Avery's directions to get print on correct side and reverse it or not? Would that not be same as printing a picture off your computer screen? Worked for me.
Good Luck

Question

How do I make my t-shirt Iron on transfers last?

What am I doing wrong? I made sure I followed the instructions on ironing, but even with the first wear, 8 out of 10 times, the images cracked and started to flake off. I don't know why 2 were good, since I did not notice doing anything differently. With washings (t-shirts turned inside out and washed in cold water) the images flaked off horribly. I've ended up throwing out multiple shirts because of this. This is very frustrating. There must be a way to make the images last.

I always wash my T shirts first, using very little detergent and add 1/4 Cup of clear vinegar, on the perma-press cycle, then dry them on the perma-press cycle. Take them out of the dryer immediately, to prevent wrinkles, and press them lightly with a steam iron. Lay them on a flat, firm surface, not the ironing board to assure you bond the transfer firmly to the fabric, following the instructions on the transfer from here. When washing the shirts later, always turn them inside out and use the gentle cycle, cold water and dry them in a cool dryer. This will extend the life of your images. I hope this helps. I know how frustrating this is...it happened to me, many times, before I learned a few tricks.

The number one reason the transfer cracks off is your fabric softener. The second is the heat in the dryer is too high. Try eliminating the fabric softer, then only dry to "damp" then hang to dry.
But before you ever wash the item, try setting the transfer by pressing it a second time before peeling off the transfer paper (taking care to not let the transfer cool too much... if the image is lifting, re heat
Hope this works out well for you.

Are you drying them in the dryer? It might help if you hang them to dry instead of putting them in the dryer. Also, did you prewash the shirts before putting the transfers on? If the shirts are shrinking, that can certainly cause the transfers to flake and peel off. You are doing the right thing in turning the shirts inside out and using cold water.

No, Avery does not make a print iron-on transfer for laser printers. The high heat of laser printers would activate the adhesive that makes your transfer stick when you iron it on. For iron-on transfers, use any of Avery's transfers along with your inkjet printer. Be sure to follow the instructions for ironing carefully for best results. I've found that using a very firm pressing surface yields the best transfer results.

No, only for inkjets due to the way laser printers "seal" the ink, they would not work for iron-on transfers.

No, Avery does not make transfer paper at this time for Laser printers. The heat from the laser printer will have an adverse effect on the output. This info came directly from a customer service representative at Avery.

Avery manila shipping tags don't appear to be acid free, but you can add pizzazz to your scrapbooking adventures with another Avery product, #53215, Printable Tags. This product is acid free and comes in a pack of 3 sheets of 8 tags. that means you get 24 tags per package. They're conveniently sized at 8-1/2"x11" and are suitable for your favorite inkjet printer!

If the packaging doesn't say acid free I would say they are not. Most manufacturers will display that information.

If I understand you quiestion correctly, what you are looking for will not exist. A 12x12 page can hold only 6 4x6 photos. (Area of a 12x12 page is 144 inches. Area of a 4x6 photo is 24 inches. 144 divided by 24 equals 6.)

Clear is a preference when you are putting the labels on something that is not white. If you stick a white label onto a red envelope, sometimes it can look funny. But it's also easier to read. I recommend trying one out before actually printing everything out.
The project will print on white, even if it says clear, but it changes the ink settings so that it doesn't smudge as much. Be careful of the smudge factor with clear labels. Give them a chance to dry well before use!
